About CISBAT

CISBAT – the International Conference on the Built Environment in Transition – has been held biennially since 1991, bringing together researchers from around the world to advance sustainability and innovation in the built environment. Established by the Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory (LESO-PB) at EPFL, the conference has become an internationally recognised forum for interdisciplinary exchange on the design, operation and transformation of buildings and urban environments.

In 2023, CISBAT entered a new chapter under the leadership of the Smart Living Lab, a joint initiative of EPFL, the University of Fribourg and the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (HEIA-FR). Renowned for its interdisciplinary character, the conference brings together expertise from science, engineering, architecture and the social sciences to explore integrated approaches to operational performance, occupant well-being, circularity and climate-responsive design. It provides a unique platform for researchers, practitioners and industry professionals to share innovative research, discuss emerging challenges and foster new collaborations.

For the first time, CISBAT 2027 will be held in Fribourg. The conference will take place on the campuses of the University of Fribourg and the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (HEIA-FR). Building on more than three decades of scientific excellence, this new edition will continue to promote interdisciplinary dialogue around the conference's three core pillars: Operation, Well-being and Circularity.
